Computer controlled transport nearer than you think?

Computer, drive me home!

Optimistic scientists foresee that “driverless” cars will be moving on streets in 2015; the visualization of traffic policeman’s worst nightmare – a car without a driver.

Imagine following picture:

You wake to what would be a normal working day full of pressure, deals and such. You have overslept and have only 15 minutes to be in the office. Meanwhile you need to make an emergency phone call, have a shave/do your make up and check your e-mail. Well you might be able to do all that in….your car. Right now it sounds more like science fiction but it may turn into reality in the near future.

New technology, growing traffic problems, erratic drivers plus new military developments (unmanned drones) furthers this possibility. On November 3, 2007, tests were carried out at the world’s first unmanned car race as vehicles reach the finish line without any human intervention. The results of this technological competition show the progression of developing cars operated purely by artificial intelligence. Mercedes have been looking at this technology for a number of years now, so the next time you hand in your company car; you might be doing it knowing that the new car you’re picking up won’t have you “behind the wheel”.
