I have long held the theory that Google artificially inflates negative content onto the first page of their search results. Why they do this is anyone’s guess, various theories exist from showing a more diverse viewpoint on a subject to using sentiment analysis. In theory if something is bad, Google could overtime understand this and weight it higher based on various assumptions:
- Direct searches with x being the subject, such as a noun then adding negative words to said query.
- References online such as ripoffreport or other negative content which is analysed in the body of the document and a result is given.
- Social signals
There maybe more but that gives you some idea of how Google promotes or might promote negative results in its search engine. This algorithm does exist. I have personally pushed negative content on to page two, only for it to pop back on to page one a week later.
