Technology and society

biometrics.jpgSo as advancements in technology take place with the likes of biometrics, facial recognition systems etc. so does the monitoring of societies in the western world. With the threat of global terrorism and increasing border security what is happening to the the personal space you once regarded as being free? It is being eroded that’s what. DNA databases will soon hold data on almost 2 in 5 people - in the future this will be over 80% of the population as new-borns will have DNA samples sent to government secret vaults; CCTV is monitoring you - you can now be seen up-to 1000 times a day in central London alone. Finger printing and biometric passports and facial recognition systems are being deployed in order to cut down on illegal aliens entering countries. The UK for example has now deployed biometric visas which hold lots of personal data on a person, which on some hands is good because it will reduce fraudulent applications for immigration, but at the same time will reduce personal anonymity and freedom.

Thousands of speed cameras and “talibans” (police camera vans) are now part of society in the UK and the US. Rather than making society a better place, these technologies are creating more contrived societies, similar in what George Orwell predicted. Groups of police are seen outside nightclubs, the US can monitor phone lines, when you enter the US you are required to have an iris scan, finger print and photo…
